Blind Date with a Book. Feb. 1. 8, 2. 01. Oregon Trail Middle School students are learning to think outside the box when it comes to choosing a book from their school library. In fact, they're experimenting with new literary genres thanks to the Blind Date with a Book promotion during February. It's her third year of the reading promotion. She and her Library Activity Club chose a broad selection of books, wrapped them in colorful paper to hide the titles, and featured them on the Blind Date table. The goal is for students to check out books based only on a short blurb they can see on the wrapping paper. Step Two is to read the book. Step Three is to rate the book on a Rate Your Date form. On a scale of one to five, how many hearts does this book deserve? What was your first impression? Took your breath away, love at first sight, ewww? Drop by the Richmond Green Library the week before Valentine’s Day to pick up a wrapped book from our Blind Date. A total disaster, just OK, amazing? Several students say they like the mystery of not knowing what the book is, and many remark that they would never have chosen the book based on the genre. Professional Interns who work at the DLC at Vista Way have completed the Disney College Program. Blind Date with a Book was so successful that we ran out of covered books. Oregon Trail’s students participated in Blind Date with a Book last year, and she’s seen great interest this year. Boys and girls are taking an equal interest in the activity, possibly due to wrapping some books in blue paper instead of all in red. A short synopsis of each book is placed on a label affixed to the wrapping. The promotional text is brief because “I don’t want to give away what the book is about,” Charlesworth said. She writes the summary based on the publisher’s notes and online reviews.
The Rate Your Date slips are collected in a container when students turn in their books. At the end of the promotion, Charlesworth will draw three slips, one from each grade level, for students to receive a gift card from Half Price Books. Other participating students will be able to choose from a variety of posters, books, etc. Rate Your Date surveys are tucked inside each book in the Blind Date with a Book promotion.
